Learn More about Nelson Glueck in the ASOR Archives

The documents and photographs presented in this website are selected materials from two collections held in the American Schools of Oriental Research Archive; the Nelson Glueck Papers and the Nelson Glueck Photograph Collection. The ASOR Archives also holds two collections from archaeological excavations directed by Glueck, the Khirbet et Tannur Excavation Records and the Tell el-Kheleifeh Excavation Records.

Finding aids, complete folders lists, and digitized materials for these collections can be found online at ASOR’s digital archive.

View Maps of Glueck’s Travels

Use these two interactive maps to visualize Glueck’s explorations of the regions in and around modern-day Israel and Jordan. To interact with a map, click the green square in the upper left hand corner of the map window for a dropdown menu and make selections to show or hide map layers.

 “Uncovering the Past: The Travels of Nelson Glueck” This map is comprised of four layers containing points which correspond to sites mentioned in Glueck’s diaries from 1936-1939. An additional later contains points corresponding to sites photographed by Glueck. (Mozilla Firefox or Chrome are strongly recommended.)

“Desert Crossroads: Nelson Glueck’s Expeditions to Eastern Palestine and Jordan” This map is comprised of four layers containing scans of Glueck’s annotated expedition maps, as well as four polygon overlays that illustrates the areas he covered during each expedition. (Mozilla Firefox or Chrome are strongly recommended.)
